A Hike is Only so Good as the Company You Are With

Waianae Water-Walls-Water – January 27, 2013  As mentioned in previous post, Waianae Valley is home to a network of trails – mostly created by Waianae Steve. The short story on Waianae Steve is a man who was from Brooklyn, came to Waianae to teach, did that for 30 years, did some hunting and hiking along the way, retired, and chose to stick with hiking. His love with the valley resulted in the creation of a network of trails that in my opinion rival the network of trails in the Tantalus area. Doing K1-Makapu’u never really crossed my mind, until Marvin and I did Olympus to Hawaii Loa in June 2012 in which case got me thinking about the segments I’ve done on the section known as K1-Makapu’u. To make a long story short, I’ve completed all the segments except this one. Joining me today, what seems like always was Marvin. Marvin came down with flu like symptoms and I was way out of shape not hiking for a few weeks so we decided to take our time. HTMC rates Kulepeamoa as advanced, to my knowledge it’s the only advanced hike in the Kahala-Hawaii K...
