Hiking Trails on Oahu

  Pu'u O Hulu Kai - July 7, 2014 I haven't done Pu'u O Hulu in a while. Last time, I did it solo. It was fun, besides the oncoming thunderstorms. Today, Aprille wanted to take her friend Amanda on this hike. Erik joined them as well. They got to an early 8 am start. Initially I bailed o the hike, because Malia and Jared felt sick. However with some prodding they were able to get out of bed and go to summer fun. I text Erik and Aprille I was a go and drove to Maile to start Pu'u O Hulu Kai and meet them somewhere near the bunkers. Pu'u O Hulu, the hill itself is somewhat by, itself. I think it was connected to Heleakala at one time back in ancient Hawaii before major erosion. Makes you think how much water was flowing millions of years ago in that valley to separate Pu'u O Hulu from Heleakala.   Pu’u O Hulu – March 9, 2012 *This is the harder way up Pu'u O Hulu Rains and hail were pounding East Honolulu and the Windward side today, so I decided to hike in the Waianae’s. There was a chance of thunder storms, so I planned a short hike by myself. Well, my wife was supposed to come, but she was sleeping and I needed to leave early as the storms were coming in. Pu'u O Hulu separates Maile and Nanakuli somewhat. It looks to be a massive volcanic rock formation that dominates the area while your driving to Waianae. Pu'u O Hulu appears to be the terminus of the Waianae Coast, but people who've been to Waianae understand that you have to go around Pu'u O Hulu to get to the town of Waianae and Makaha. I digress, Pu'u O Hulu has double peaks. The peak near the ocean is appropriately called kai, and the peak heading towards the mountain is called uka. My goal today was to do both peaks. Heleakala to Palikea – February 26, 2012 This hike was not only an adventure, but felt like a journey. There are some hiking routes on Oahu that take all day and Heleakala to Palikea is one of those hikes. My goal for this hike was to start in Nanakuli and hike to my house in Kapolei. That didn’t happen today; nevertheless, we achieved a different goal – a great experience that no one can take away. This hike is categorized in the super hike category not because of its length. I think being mentally prepared to do a long hike in one day has to be thought about before doing this hike. Marvin and I invited anyone and everyone we knew, however anybody and everybody had something going on. It was just Marvin and I. Since Marvin doesn’t have a car, we had to problem solve the staging of the cars.
