Hiking Trails on Oahu

Laie-Malaekahana - February 13, 2016 It's February 2016 and this is my first hike of the year. With Jared's baseball and Malia's dance, weekends have been busy. I was invited by Kikaida (Kenji) to Laie-Malaekahana. He hasn't done it before and wanted to check it off the list. He invited his usual hiking partners and I invited Bernice from OAG's. Start time was at 7am. I got there 5 minutes late because I had to go to the bathroom. The only bathroom before Laie field that I know of is Malaekahana Beach Park. I stopped there to pee, then headed off to Laie field. I was the last one there and met the crew for the day. Joining us was Kenji, Glen, Justin, Thessa, Dale, Bernice, and I.   Laie-Schofield Video Laie-Schofield - May 23-24, 2015 This was a planned overnighter, not one of my unplanned overnighters. One personal goal of mine in recent years was to complete the entire portion of the Koolau Summit Ridge sections from Pupukea to Makapuu, not including the 3 insane saddles - Moanalua, Nuuanu, Kalihi. I've completed the 40 mile section except the parts from Poamoho to Papali and Poamoho Cabin to Pauao. Over the last two years, every time I've planned to do those sections, something cancelled it. This time the commitment was real. Joining me on this adventure trek was an all OAG crew - Erik, Aprille, & Allison. This would also be a good opportunity for Erik, Aprille, & Allison to finish up their sections of the Koolau Ridge from Pupukea to Schofield-Waikane.  Our agenda for day 1 was start at 7am ~ Laie 3.5 hours -> Kawailoa 0.5 hours -> Koloa Cabin 1.5 hours -> Castle 2 hours -> Opaeula Cabin 1.5 hours, ending at 4pm.   Pupukea-Laie II - January 5, 2015 This hike was meant for the OAG's to experience the Northern section of the KST. Many of the OAG's haven't hiked in the northern section of the KST. All of them have done Poamoho, Pupukea, Laie, but the Northern KST is a whole nother story. To do this section takes an internal love for hiking that not too many people can find within themselves. It is also confusing as hell and no matter how much times you do it, getting lost is always a possibility.  Today we planned on a 10 hour hike, it turned out much longer than that. Joining the hike was all OAG's today ~ Erik, Aprille, Darren, & Sarah. I knew Erik & Aprille would find this hike rewarding as they requested it. Laie-Papali - June 18, 2014 Initially this was suppose to be Laie to Kawailoa. The goal was to hike the Kawailoa trail to the spot where Erik and I turned around in April 2014. By doing this, we could connect the blue lines on our gpx file. However since Erik had the whole day off and I'm in summer mode, we decided to tackle Laie-Papali. If I remembered correctly, I did this route with DGC and hiking crew and it took us 16 hours to complete, albeit we did get lost multiple times. Erik asked me during the week if we could do it faster. I hesitated, but threw out a number of 12 hours. What made this more crazy was that we started late 8am and we were going to go down Kawailoa to the spot.  To do this hike within 12 hours, I told Erik we have to be efficient which means minimal breaks and quickly problem solve the difficult twist and turns of the KST. Papali/Castle-Laie – May 5, 2013 I was invited by DGC (David C.) to his last Ko’olau Summit hike. DGC has done nearly the entire Ko’olau Summit, in segments of course. And this, was his last hurrah. DGC tried this hike a few months ago, but lost the trail at the helipad at Kawailoa. He decided to backtrack and go to Pupukea, which was a good thing because he was able to complete that portion of the KST, which he needed.   The week before, I asked fellow hiking partner Marvin for the gps track of this hike. He did Papali Uka/Castle-Laie a while back. Marvin got lost too during that time, but found his way, an accomplishment that should be commended. Today’s hike consisted of some experienced hikers. We had Ted, Randy, Thomas, Jay, Yoshi, Chenay, DGC, Gerwin, Kenji, Francis, and me. We met at the Temple Valley McDonald’s at 4:30am. There, we all ate breakfast, then talked about the pre-hike plan.
