Hiking Trails on Oahu

Opaeula - December 6, 2015 The time is now. Opaeula! I've been waiting 3 years to do this hike, now it shall be done. Kawai'iki was on the schedule for the HTMC, branching off Kawai'iki is the Opaeula trail, a short loop trail that comes back to the Kawai'iki/Opaeula junction.  The HTMC plan today was to meet at Haleiwa Beach Park at  8:30am, do the briefing and drive up the 8 mile road to the trailhead. We would do both Opaeula and Kawai'iki today and exit all together. What a treat! This was a members only hike, which is good, at least we would have good hikers turn out, not bad ones. The plan was for us to meet at Erik's at 6:30 am, and then carpool to Haleiwa Beach Park (meeting place for the hike). With the waves possibly hitting 30 feet, I got paranoid and asked Erik if we could leave early to avoid traffic. Aprille & I met at Erik's house and left towards Haleiwa Beach Park.   Kawainui – September 1, 2013 The hype of Kawainui came and went today, it did not disappoint. One of the gems of the Ko’olaus, Kawainui features this big pool, the best swimming hole on the island. I joined the HTMC as they did their bi-annual hike of Kawainui. I saw some familiar faces including Caveman Marcus G., Nate, Jay and OAG’s – Darren, David, Daniel, and Erik. I also met Bernice who usually hikes with OAG members. We met at Haleiwa Beach Park at 8:15am. From there we carpooled to the Kawailoa Farm, entered the gate, and drove about 6 miles to the trailhead going through 2 locked gates in the process.   Kawai’iki – February 12, 2012 Seventy-Six hikers came out today to do a hike that is very difficult to access. Kawai’iki is a trail located deep inland and on land owned by the B ishop Estate. To get to the trailhead, you have to drive on dirt roads through 3 gates, then on a military access road to the trailhead. The reward is a 5 mile roundtrip hike through the heart of the Ko’olaus. My day started off at 7 am. The big problem was that the hike started at 9 am. I got impatient waiting around at my house, so I started driving to the North Shore. At 7:30 am, I was there. Not wanting to wait, I drove to the Banzai Pipeline. The waves were firing; there were at least 50 people in the lineup. I’ve always dreamt of watching waves break at pipeline. The waves were at least 10 feet high, if not bigger. I observed for a while, watching surfers barrelling stellar waves. After sometime, I went back to my car and drove to Haleiwa Beach Park.
