The Sunrise at Pu'u Ma'eli'eli

Pu’u Ma’eli’eli Sunrise – July 13, 2013 I’ve always wanted to do a sunrise hike again. Last time I caught a sunrise was when I did the Lanikai Pillboxes years ago. Though I’m an early riser, doing a sunrise hike is still a hike that needs some type of commitment. Since I live in Kapolei, it means that I have to drive to the windward side. In addition, I also know that I will be taking a chance on the weather, since Hawaii weather is so unpredictable. With the forecast appearing good, it was off to Kahalu’u to do Pu’u Ma’eli’eli. I would join OAG- Erik and Aprille, along with David and my son Jared. I thought this would be a good hike for Jared because he too is an early riser and needs to break the monotony of summer. All he’s been doing is playing video games, withering his brain away. I got a super early start. I woke up at 1:30am, and just packed my stuff and watched TV. At 3:45am, I picked up Jared from his bed, got him into the car, and drove to the windward side. ...

The Second time to The Rock Bridge

Image
Rock Bridge – July 12, 2013   My second time to the rock bridge had one simple mission: to photograph the bridge. Last time, the waves pounded the rock bridge making a photo opt. anywhere near the bridge dangerous. I hoped today we would get a better opportunity. The small crew consisted of us OAG members, Erik, Aprille, as we tried to meet up at the Hanauma Bay parking lot. Erik and Aprille got in, however, I got turned away because the parking lot was full. I parked at Kokohead Park and walked up to the bus stop meeting Erik and Aprille. Even in the hot sun, we hiked at a blistering pace, getting to the rock bridge in under 45 minutes. There, the waves sporadically crashed over the bridge making it easier to get a good shot this time. Erik seemed to want to walk on top the bridge. He took a bunch of pictures, but in his mind, he was going to find a way onto the bridge. I didn’t want to because I knew if I fell, that would be it. Believe me a fall into the water and the prospects ...

Lighting up the Waterfalls in Waimano

Waimano Falls (Illumination Hike) – July 3, 2013   Many months ago, OAG member Daniel found some cool pictures on the Internet portraying beautiful waterfalls that appear to illuminate.   The OAG’s put their minds together and actually figured out how to do it, in theory. We put our plan into action. Daniel bought glow sticks, which is the primary tool to make this cool effect. Then we decided on a place to shoot, which would be Waimano Pools. We created a simple plan 1) hike at sunset 2) set up tripods and camera’s at the bottom of the falls 3) runners go to the top dropping glow sticks, while the others at the bottom retrieve it, simple right!   With a solid plan, we just needed a good time to hike. However, everyone seemed to be busy + Aprille was in the Philippines. We wanted all OAG members to be on this hike because of the Epicness. In the end, we decided to 'just do it'. But we would call it practice. Today was the day! Joining the group were OA...
