Caveman's Birthday Hike

Makapu’u Ridge to Puka - December 29, 2013 This hike was a birthday celebration for Marcus Greigo. Marcus is a hiker in the Oahu Hiking Community known for doing some of the most ‘extreme’ hikes on the island. If you read my entries, I really don’t know the true meaning of extreme, so I call a very hard hike, a difficult hike. Regardless on your interpretation of the word extreme, this hike I was about to go on had some bad ass hikers, people who’ve completed the entire crest of the Ko’olau Summit and some of Oahu’s most dangerous ridges. I’ve hiked with a lot of these people before and let me tell you, they bad ass. I picked up Darren from Mililani and we headed off towards Makapu’u. Near the University cut off, my tire blew out. I panicked a little, but we methodically got the spare and put it on. However, while driving, the spare was flat, the car started to shake since the car was running on 3 tires, so I drove to a gas station nearby to fill air. Luckily Darren knew where th...

A Perfect Day in Hawaii!!!

Koko Crater & From Here to Eternity Beach  - December 27, 2013 We did it again! Just like last Monday. One hike plus one beach equals great day! I guess this is the theme of my vacation. The kids actually seem motivated to do something like this. Joining us today were my two kids Malia and Jared, and Malia’s friend Marissa. The agenda today was to hike Koko Crater. After the hike, we would get a bite to eat, and then make the drive to the Halona Blowhole, walk down to From Here to Eternity Beach. Then we would finish up with shave ice at Kokonuts. Koko Crater can be intimidating as its about 1,048 steps to the summit. There is no decline. It’s up and up till you summit. We had a late start, plus there was traffic which made the start time at 11:00am. The stairs like always was packed with people. Jared led the way, Marissa followed. Poor thing, Malia was struggling. She is not a cardio endurance type of hiker. Jared’s muscles seemed to be primed for hiking. I stayed with...

Diamond Head at Night

Diamond Head Lookout - December 13, 2013 money shot of Diamond Head Lookout, used for my calendar After a hard week with stomach flu symptoms, I mustered enough courage to tackle the rim of Diamond Head again. Last time I hiked up Diamond Head in the dark was 2012. The goal this time was to get the money shots from the lookout. Joining the crew today was Marvin, Will, Christian, & Alan. I’ve hiked with all of these guys before and they are all good guys. We met at Marvin’s house at 6:30pm and brought our DSLR camera's, from there Christian and Will drove us to a place where rich people live. We found some parking. At the end of the street was where the trailhead started. The problem was that the last house at the end of the street was putting on this massive party with dozens of people in attendance. Dozens of people meant many eyes on us, but we stayed goal oriented and walked towards the end of the street. There appeared a camera which was mounted to a pole. We quickly bypa...
