Back at it again, this time Pueo Falls

Pueo Falls - March 29, 2015 Back at it again! Last week, we did Pear Gulch in Makaha. This week we were going to do the elusive Pueo Falls. I've been wanting to do this hike for years now, today it would all come to fruition. I've been enamored with Pueo Falls since I read Nate Yuen's write up of it a few years back. At that time, I thought it was the highest waterfall on Oahu. I was wrong, but the falls is massive.  Baron invited the OAG's on this hike today. Joining Baron was Darren, Erik, and I. We had an early meet up time, 6am at Sport Authority. The planned route today was to hike Pueo falls and back out. On the way there, we would help Baron find 2 junctions 1) Kumaipo trail 2) King Kong trail. We expected to be out there at least 8 hours.  Baron has this thing about bypassing the Board of Water Supply service road. So we took the H4 and Gigi trail to bypass the road. Eventually we hit the Kan Aii Heiau and continued on the other service road pa...

A hike in Makaha

Pear Gulch - March 22, 2015 In the southern part of Makaha Valley is a gulch known as Pear Gulch named because the gps track looks like a pear. B has been enamored with the Waianae range recently specifically Makaha & Ohikilolo Valleys. Why? He gets fixated on stuff like this. He got some information for Waianae S and Makaha G about a Gulch that meanders between Knife Edge and Razor Ridge. He wanted to find the trail that branches off Knife Edge so he could loop the two dangerous ridges together one day.  We met at the Sports Authority in Waikele at about 7am. Joining us were Bernice & Allison. B drove us to Makaha Valley checking in with the guard and parking in the visitors parking, dropping Makaha G's name to get in. We started on the Board of Water Supply road for only a few minutes, but at the concrete slab, we quickly went into the forest what B called the H4 trail. This trail intersected with the gigi trail marked by green spray paint. In no time we got on the servic...

Mauna Oahi to Pyramid hike in Kuliouou

Mauna Oahi to Pyramid - September 19, 2015 I haven't done a hike in a while, well since August. Today was suppose to be a planned overnighter where we were suppose to camp at Mariner's Ridge and bail Kamiloiki. But with the weather being so unpredictable, that wasn't going to happen. Although, today was an awesome weather day. The plan today was to start on Mauna Oahi, summit, make the right on the KST towards the pyramid, and then bail down Hahaione.  Joining me today was Aprille and Allison. I thought more people would show up today since it would be a short hike, but that would not be the case. I picked up Aprille at 9am in Waikele. Since I didn't hike in so long, I forgot to bring food, WTF? I had to stop by 7-11 in Hawaii Kai to buy a spam musubi and a tuna roll. I love eating 7-11 tuna and salmon rolls. We met Allison a little after 10am and started the hike at the end of Hahaione Street. Allison hasn't been exercising so her cardio was shot. She also had comp...

Family Trip to the Makapu'u Tidepools

Makapu'u Tidepools - March 18, 2015 Today we finally had a chance to do the Dragon's Nostrils hike. Jared and I have been wanting to do this hike for a while now. Today, we finally committed to the hike. This hike starts on the Lighthouse trail. About halfway on the Lighthouse trail, you take a junction down to the tidepools. Not only were we going to see the tidepools and dragon's nostrils, but also whales playing right off shore.  The drive to Hawaii Kai was slow because of all of the lane closures. Getting anywhere on Oahu now days takes a lot of time. Its a 'catch 22'. People complain about our crappy roads. When the city decides to fix the roads, they have to close lanes. Now people are complaining about the traffic.  We took a risk today going to the Lighthouse trail because the city is fixing it and have closed it a few times in previous weeks. Although they were doing work today, the trail was open, probably because of spring break. Jared was exhausted walki...
