Kayaking the Wailua River in Kauai

Wailua River Kayak and hike to Uluwehi Falls - October 11, 2016 16 years ago Michelle and I did this kayaking adventure up the Wailua river to a Secret Waterfall. Michelle always gives me a hard time about it as she said I never did any paddling and just sat back and did nothing. That is not entirely true, I think I just needed a break or something.  This time we would take the kids on the adventure up the Wailua river. Jared was scared and got nervous saying, "how dangerous is it?". We assured him that it would be okay.  Apparently back then it was a free for all and companies were letting a lot of people go into the river. This led to problems. Now days, people cannot kayak the river on Sundays and companies are limited to the amount of canoes they can rent out per day. Companies suggest that you do a guided tour which is 3x the price of the rental.  Anyway, we weren't going to do that shit. Nobody is going to guide us anywhere, we were going to do it on our own....

Hiking the Waimea Canyon Trail in Kauai

Waipo'o Falls Hike - October 10, 2016 This was on the to do list. I asked Baron about this hike, he said that I couldn't get to the base of the waterfall. He was right. But this hike does take you to a small waterfall at the top of Waipo'o Falls. There is a Canyon Lookout where you can see Waipo'o Falls. The waterfall is said to be 800 feet. The hike starts on the Westside of the Canyon rim and traverses to the Eastside to the waterfall. It looks dangerous, but its not.  Driving to the trail head is an adventure especially coming from Wailua. It took us almost 2 hours to get to the trailhead. It takes an hour to get to Waimea and then another hour to get to the Pu'u Hina'aina lookout. The Waimea Canyon trail starts to the left of the parking lot.  view from a scenic point I was worried that the kids couldn't handle. It said moderate hike, so I knew it was going to be a walk in the park for them.  A handful of people were starting right in front of us. We h...

A Special Garden on the Garden Isle

Limahuli Gardens - October 8, 2016  We took a family trip to Kauai in October. We visited a number of tourist sites.  This was not really a hike, but the garden is about 1 mile round trip, I guess it could be considered a hike.  Limahuli Gardens is such a treat. The cost for a tourist is $20 to get in and $10 for Kama'aina. Today was Ohana day. The lady said every Saturday is Ohana day and admission would be free. WOW! I was so happy, free admission is always good. Just like the Mob Museum in Las Vegas had free admission on Valentine's Day, we just so happen to go on Valentine's Day. These are great coincidences. The garden is known for these wonderful terraces. They of course were restored, but one can only imagine how beautiful it was back in Old Hawaii, before all the ancient structures came to ruin.  terrace view from lookout The garden is on 17 acres and the hike is about 3/4 mile long. But it does go uphill requiring someone cardio. The divert the water ...
