Camping Near Mariner's Ridge

Image
Mariner's Campout - February 19, 2017 I know Erik wanted to do this for a while. I said I would join him. I think OAG was interested, but in the end it was only Michelle and I with Aprille. Oh well, it was worth a try.  To do an overnighter takes some planning and luck. We coordinated the food and had a plan. That was about it. Everything else rested on good weather and execution. Forecast was rain and wind, lots of wind.  We met at the Hahaione trailhead. I can't remember the street off hand. I know it was by the Hawaii Kai apartments somewhere. Joining us were also David, Daniel, and Darrell. They were just going to the summit and back down, doing an in and out. I haven't seen Darrell in forever since last summer. It was good to see him again.   Erik and I both had 40lbs packs. The problem with my pack was that the zipper to the top compartment broke, so I had to use a clip to hold my goods. The other problem was that our lantern was so big it couldn't fit in my pack,...

A Gem of a Hike in Hawaii Kai

Pu'u O Kona - February 12, 2017 Last time I did this loop was near 6 years ago. This time I was going to take Michelle on this hike. Rain pounded the island yesterday, but in the forecast was great weather and only 10% chance of rain. It was a go! Joining Michelle and I on the hike today was a huge group. It was Erik, Darren, Aprille, Bernice, Jana, Katie, Ryan, and Josh. Last time I did a hike with Josh was about 6 years ago, nearly the same time I did this hike.  We met at the 7-11 and then drove to the trailhead. We started up Kuliouou West. It took us about 30 minutes to hit the crest of the ridge. It was a little hot today. The summit appeared clear as day. Michelle did well on the way up to the summit. Pu'u O Kona is the showcase of East Honolulu. There is really no better hike on this side of the island. It took us about 3 hours to summit. Near the eroded section were some nice natives including an Ohia tree with yellow flowers. Michelle went up the eroded section and al...

Getting to the Waimalu Meadow

Waimano-Meadow - February 4, 2017 This hike was going to be a grinder no matter what way you cut it up. The overall goal was to hike Waimano-Aiea with backup plan #1 Waimano-Meadow back to Waimano or backup plan #2 Waimano-Waimalu Middle. After doing Waimalu Ditch last week, I had a feeling that the Middle Ridge trail would be in bad condition to hike. This led me to the assumption that going down Waimalu Middle would be a bad idea and we would only  go down as a last resort.  I predicted a 12-13 hour hike. Sarah wanted to invite her boyfriend Uhi and friend from Japan Jena. I said ok, but they probably wouldn't be her friend after the hike. Going on the hike today was the overnight crew; Darren, Erik, Aprille, Bernice, and Sarah. Also Darren's girlfriend Jana would be coming.  I met Erik & Aprille in front of the Aiea gate at about 4:30am to stage a car. From there, I drove us to the Waimano trailhead. A lot of hunting trucks were in the area. We started the hike a l...
