Kaipapa'u Falls in Hauula

Image
Kaipapa'u Falls - July 29, 2017 Erik planned Kaipapa'u which is good because Daniel would show up. Bernice also came.  The Kaipapau's trailhead is located near Daniel's house. The hike is long about 10 miles in distance. Last time I did the hike was in 2012 with the HTMC club. This hike is also the start of the Kaipapa'u Bunkers which is a very underrated hike in my opinion.  Joining the hike today was Erik, Darren, Bernice, Daniel, Hina and I. We started at about 8:40am. The hike started on a concrete service road and enters the forest. Strawberry guava trees were fruiting and I told myself I have to pick some before I leave. After about 10 minutes the trees spread out and it looks like a fantasy movie. It is so green and lush.  Bernice walking through the fantasy like lush green forest As usual we always talk story for the first hour catching up on each others lives. At about mile 1.5 we hit this huge grove of mountain apple trees. The fruit season was about to en...

Finally Finishing off Hapapa-Kanehoa

Hapapa-Kanehoa - July 16, 2017 This was it. I was going solo today to accomplish something many years in the making, since 2013. I woke up early and wanted to go running, but it was kinda late. I woke Michelle up to drive me to Schofield. I tried to pack my best under last minute circumstances. I forgot my bivy.  Michelle dropped me off at the Hapapa trail head at 7:15am. It was cool today. I got up to the notches at about 8am encountered 5 hikers, three of them were taking pictures and two were coming down from the notch. I got up to the summit at 8:30am. For some reason I still can't find the geomarker. The initial section after the summit was overgrown. I wore a sleeveless shirt today, go figure. I brought my sleeves though, but my arms were still getting murdered.  Hapapa Meadow Notch Hapapa Summit View atop Hapapa overlooking Nanakuli I got to the pimple (this is where we turned around last time) at about 9:00am. I was very surprised. The swath that we created last...

Birthday Hike for DJ

Pu'u Ma'eli'eli (David's Birthday Hike) - July 15, 2017 Today was David's 71st birthday. For his hike we did something easy or what we thought was easy. We took a scenic route that skirted the base of Ma'eli'eli. I've never taken this route before so it was going to be interesting.  We met a Koolau Shopping Center at 8:30am and walked on Kahekili Highway. We hiked up Ma'eli'eli ridge, but made a right at a junction which took us down to the marsh. Strawberry guava was in peak season and I took advantage of the harvest.  At the bottom, we encountered this cool looking dirt road. David said lots of crews film movies here. We sang happy birthday to David. Jana made a peanut butter and brownie to celebrate.   As we continued on, we took a wrong turn and ended up on Ma'eli'eli ridge. We topped out at the world class view. But since it was so hot, we decided to hang out under the shade for most of the time we were up there.  Going back was like...
