Hamama & Waihe'e Falls Hike
Hamama Falls & Waihe'e Falls - May 12, 2011
The last time I did Hamama Falls was in May of 2010. One year later, it was time to go again. This time, the focus was to get to Waihe'e Falls. Last time, Erik, Chris & I went to look for Waihe'e falls, but after 45 minutes of searching, we came up empty. Over the past year, I've been following hiking blogs, mainly Kaleo L. Island Trails and Josh S. 808 Goonies. I've also been following Wayde's World Poor Man's Guide to Hawaii's You Tube videos. All of them have been to Hamama Falls and Waihe'e Falls. On their experiences, they marked the path to Waihe'e Falls. Kaleo Lancaster marked the trail to Waihe'e Falls with orange ribbons. With all that valuable information, today was the day to find the elusive Waihe'e Falls.
On this day, Michelle and I had the day off and drove to Kahalu'u. We walked on the gravel road (which is owned by the Board of Water Supply) towards Hamama Falls. Again, besides the gravel road, this part of the island has kept its Authenticity throughout the years. It took us around 50 minutes to Hamama and boy it looked as beautiful as ever. After a short rest, we ventured to find Waihe'e Falls. We got to the Banyan tree and crossed the stream. The game plan was to look for the orange ribbons and follow it throughout. Kaleo L. did a pin point job because the ribbons were dead on. If you stayed smart and followed the ribbons there was no way of getting lost. It took about 35 minutes to get to Lower Waihe'e Falls. I yelled out a sigh of relief. Michelle and I sat down by Waihe'e Falls and ate a snack. The falls cascades from multiple levels and goes up pretty high. I tried to find an entry trail to get to Upper Waihe'e Falls, but it looked like all dead ends. I'm assuming you have to contour around to get to the upper falls. Josh Serrano 808 Goonies wrote in his blog that he used a rope to get to the upper falls, but I didn't see it. Lower Waihe'e Falls is about 20 ft high and it was gushing on this day. The hike back was all downhill and we walked it at a quick pace.
After the hike, we drove 2 towns over to eat at Cinnamon's. Place was packed, I assume as always because of its populatiry. We ate some great sandwiches Roast Beef Dip and Chicken Cashew (WINNA!) and ate a cinnamon roll for dessert. Just like every post hike meal, I pounded all that food in less than 10 minutes. It was a day worth waiting for!!!
