One of the Best Groups Hikes in a While

Waianae Water Works – October 28, 2012

Been a while since I’ve been out on the trails! Had to get back into hiking again! On the HTMC agenda was Waianae Water Works. Last time I step foot in Waianae Valley was when I did Kawiwi to Waianae Kai with Baron and crew. Today’s hike would be a little easier.  

Leading the hike today was Waianae Steve. Everyone in the hiking community knows Waianae Steve, he creates and maintains the many network of trails in Waianae Valley.

Being out of shape, I knew I couldn’t stay with the rabbits of the group. In addition, not being on the trails for a long time makes me appreciate the day spent hiking. I decided not to rush it today and go at a pace which I’m comfortable it. 

There were near 50 hikers that turned out for the hike. I saw many familiar faces. We all met at Waianae Steve’s house and car pooled to the trailhead. I jumped in Daniel’s car with David, Aprille, & Alaina. I knew the entire group from previous hikes with HTMC.

Waianae Steve created the Water Works trail by following an old plantation trail. He set up blue markers along the trail for hikers to follow. The route cuts across Kanewai stream many times and meanders around Waianae Valley. A little over an hour into the hike, we hit the first of 3 tunnels. I put my headlamp on and took out my flashlight as Aprille and I waited our turn to explore the tunnel. It was spooky to say the least. The water was murky and knee high. Waianae Steve the prankster that he is put those moving hand bowls on a platform in a crevice in lieu of Halloween. Luckily I noticed it before it scared the shit out of me. The first tunnel wasn’t too long, but the cave seemed to enclose the further we went.

After the tunnel, we hiked more up the mountain encountering another tunnel and few waterfalls. According to Waianae Steve’s website (http://www.waianaecrider.com/Hikes/2011/13-WaterWorksw-Goonies/01.htm  the two waterfalls are Twin Pipe Falls and Mamake Falls. Both falls were flowing nicely. After the falls we walked deeper into the valley then encountered the last tunnel. This one was the longest one, 400 feet long (pictured on top of the page). The water wasn’t too deep. Aprille and Alaina were following me into the tunnel as we explored it until its end. The tunnel had candles at the end of it, looks like Steve’s lair, lol.


Going back, we followed orange markers to the Board of Water Supply Road. I was able to chat with fellow hikers and got to know more about them on a peaceful day in Waianae.

Waikakalaua Stream – November 23, 2012 We didn’t find the tunnels today, but that’s okay. A few months back, I scouted possible access points to get down towards Waikakalaua Stream. Today, along with Erik, we would find what we were looking for. Erik has lived in Wahiawa his whole life and I have lived in Mililani most of my life. This hike, albeit an exploration hike would make a lot of sense. Waikakalaua stream separates Wahiawa from Mililani. The hike is described in Stuart Ball’s original book, though I don’t have that book, it wouldn’t matter today as we were going to explore a different route.        Our goal was to find the pool and tunnels. Kipapa Trail to Schofield-Waikane

  Kipapa to Schofield-Waikane – June 14,15 2013 First of all, the initial plan was to get to Papali-Uka, but that didn’t happen. It is apparent that this route was for the grinders. Knowing what we know now, starting from Manana and getting to Papali would have been a three day thing or a two full day excursion. What we experienced was two 10+ hour hiking days and it was a hard 10+ hours for both days.  The plan today was to start on Manana drop into the valley towards Iliahi ridge, then drop into the valley towards Waiawa, and drop into the valley again towards Kipapa. From Kipapa, we would make the long hike up to the Ko’olau Summit, then to Waiahole Uka, crossover to Waikane, and then all the way to the Poamoho Cabin where we would set up camp. Getting to the Waimalu Meadow

Waimano-Meadow - February 4, 2017 This hike was going to be a grinder no matter what way you cut it up. The overall goal was to hike Waimano-Aiea with backup plan #1 Waimano-Meadow back to Waimano or backup plan #2 Waimano-Waimalu Middle. After doing Waimalu Ditch last week, I had a feeling that the Middle Ridge trail would be in bad condition to hike. This led me to the assumption that going down Waimalu Middle would be a bad idea and we would only  go down as a last resort.  I predicted a 12-13 hour hike. Sarah wanted to invite her boyfriend Uhi and friend from Japan Jena. I said ok, but they probably wouldn't be her friend after the hike. Going on the hike today was the overnight crew; Darren, Erik, Aprille, Bernice, and Sarah.
