A Place That I Knew Existed, But Never Went to

 Kawai Nui Marsh – February 9, 2013

I was sick all week with the flu. This flu was nasty, I mean sitting on the toilet or my face in the toilet for hours at a time nasty. I wanted to hike so badly, but with my body still recovering and trying to hold nutrients, I decided to gather up the kids and do a short hike which has been on the list for ages.

Many people go here, its free, what makes it interesting is the vast amount of land that is so picturesque, it makes Oahu look even better than what it already is.

I didn’t know too much about this place, only that it’s a wetland and is home to many native and endangered plants and animals. The website is listed here: http://www.kawainuimarsh.com/Site%20Folder/index.html can tell you more of what is going on. Believe me, there is a mother load of stuff that appears to be going on to help preserve this marsh. I can bore you with facts I’ve read, but I would do a poor job compared to the website listed above which gets into the nitty gritty.

I had no energy, so we walked on the paved road with a 3-6 foot extended rock wall to the left of us. I tried my best to push on, but after 15 minutes, I was tired. Before we turned back, Jared wanted to climb the wall. As I watched him climb the wall, I saw a trail on the other side of the wall. Ooh la la, I thought. I went for it. A little into the trail, I seen disposed garbage. It looked like a dump site with all kinds of stuff piled up. I continued further, and immediately saw a shanty town. Holy Shit! It was a massive homeless subdivision. WTF!!! Instead of exploring, I turned around, and told my kids that we weren’t going to explore the trail. They didn’t want to anyways.

Before we left, I took beautiful pictures. In the background appears to be Kokokahi ridge or Oneawa  Hills with K1 surrounded by clouds in the backdrop. Just beautiful!
