Black Point Salt Water Pool

Black Point - June 13, 2014

My friend Christian invited me on a short stroll to Black Point. Christian has stage 4 throat cancer and fighting the battle has been real hard on him. He has been fighting like a champion though and will continue fighting. I messaged Christian to see when he was available. He just finish throat surgery and needs more rounds of kimo therapy. I tried to schedule something after his surgery, but before his kimo. Today was the day.

Joining us today was Marvin and Janice, Will would join us later for lunch. We met at Fort Ruger Park also known as the Diamond Head Triangle Park. From there, we drove to Black Point Road and a gated community. We walked on the private road to a bird sanctuary and continued Hawaii Kai side to a wooden fenced off area. Within the wooden fence area is this unbelievable looking Salt Water Pool. It just seemed unreal to me. Supposedly there is a guard there and cameras, however we didn't see the guard. We snapped a bunch of pictures of the Salt Water Pool something that many people of this island don't get to see.

Christian suggested Cromwell's after which we did and ate at Fendu Boulangeire after Cromwells. We ordered 3 big pizzas and a lilikoi cheesecake. This place is a hole in the wall in Manoa Marketplace, but they have excellent food. My favorite pizza was the pesto. We talked many stories, it was good to keep up with fellow hikers.

Waikakalaua Stream – November 23, 2012 We didn’t find the tunnels today, but that’s okay. A few months back, I scouted possible access points to get down towards Waikakalaua Stream. Today, along with Erik, we would find what we were looking for. Erik has lived in Wahiawa his whole life and I have lived in Mililani most of my life. This hike, albeit an exploration hike would make a lot of sense. Waikakalaua stream separates Wahiawa from Mililani. The hike is described in Stuart Ball’s original book, though I don’t have that book, it wouldn’t matter today as we were going to explore a different route.        Our goal was to find the pool and tunnels. Kipapa Trail to Schofield-Waikane

  Kipapa to Schofield-Waikane – June 14,15 2013 First of all, the initial plan was to get to Papali-Uka, but that didn’t happen. It is apparent that this route was for the grinders. Knowing what we know now, starting from Manana and getting to Papali would have been a three day thing or a two full day excursion. What we experienced was two 10+ hour hiking days and it was a hard 10+ hours for both days.  The plan today was to start on Manana drop into the valley towards Iliahi ridge, then drop into the valley towards Waiawa, and drop into the valley again towards Kipapa. From Kipapa, we would make the long hike up to the Ko’olau Summit, then to Waiahole Uka, crossover to Waikane, and then all the way to the Poamoho Cabin where we would set up camp. Pu'u Keahi a Kahoe Hike in Moanalua Valley

Pu’u Keahi a Kahoe – November 27, 2011 Today with the HTMC was Pu’u Keahi a Kahoe, the showcase hike on the quarterly schedule. Keahi a Kahoe is the dominant peak in back of Moanalua Valley and the dominant peak in the Haiku valley area in Kanehoe. Keahi a Kahoe is also near the apex of the Haiku Stairs (Stairway to Heaven). The day started off super early for me. I woke up at 5 am and made some breakfast. At 6:30 am, I headed to Starbucks in Waikele to get a coffee. Then I drove to the end of Ala Aolani Street to Moanalua Community Park. I was super early and waited for everyone to come. At 8 am, Mike (who usually does the trail maintenance), was coordinating this hike and gave the route for the hike. He told us that the plan today was to go up the HECO power line trail to gain the ridge, and then make a left onto Tripler Ridge before summiting. He also mentioned that we wouldn’t be going to Keahi a Kahoe or head back down Moanalua’s Middle Ridge. He said it was too windy. Fair enough...
