The Search for the Nuuanu Petroglyphs

The search for the Nuuanu Petroglyphs began today as Daniel and DJ joined my kids and I on the expedition to find these ancient carvings. We started the day at the Royal Mausoleum searching for the Kamehameha's graves. This sacred ground had so much mana we couldn't even park our cars there. Well, there was no parking available in the area, however the place is really cool and we were the only ones there making me think people on Oahu don't go here. 

After the Mausoleum, we ventured behind the cemetery to Alapena Pool and Kapena falls. Near Alapena pool are the petroglyph carvings surrounded by metal bars. There appears to be a man and a dog. The metal bars are there for protection since there has been so much vandalism in the area. We tried to look for more petroglyphs, but all the searching came up empty. We did enjoy Alapena and Kapena falls. It was Daniel and DJ's first time there, shocking news to me as they are seasoned hikers and this hike is popular. Malia asked to play in the stream, I hesitated, but told her she could go. The stream is nasty because its in an urban area which means pollution galore.

On the way back we searched and searched for more petroglyphs, but came up empty. The exploration continues. I had so much fun poking around the area. I have to remember to bring mosquito repellent next time.

Nanakuli Cave - June 9, 2015 The plan today was to do Ohikilolo to the cabin. But as we were hiking, Erik had some major tightness in his chest. I played it by ear as maybe it would go away. But 2 1/2 hours into the hike, it got worst, so we decided to bail on Ohikilolo and save it for another time.  Aprille said we could visit the Nanakuli Cave because it was nearby. I decided to take the group to the the  Ku'ilioloa Heiau   (I couldn't remember the name at the time) f irst. The heiau is adjacent to Pokai Bay and was used in ancient times to teach navigational skills. After a short stay at the heiau, I drove us to Laumania Ave. near a beach in Nanakuli where Aprille said the cave was. There were a lot of people at the unnamed beach. Exploring a hike in Mililani

Waikakalaua Stream – November 23, 2012 We didn’t find the tunnels today, but that’s okay. A few months back, I scouted possible access points to get down towards Waikakalaua Stream. Today, along with Erik, we would find what we were looking for. Erik has lived in Wahiawa his whole life and I have lived in Mililani most of my life. This hike, albeit an exploration hike would make a lot of sense. Waikakalaua stream separates Wahiawa from Mililani. The hike is described in Stuart Ball’s original book, though I don’t have that book, it wouldn’t matter today as we were going to explore a different route.        Our goal was to find the pool and tunnels. Kipapa Trail to Schofield-Waikane

  Kipapa to Schofield-Waikane – June 14,15 2013 First of all, the initial plan was to get to Papali-Uka, but that didn’t happen. It is apparent that this route was for the grinders. Knowing what we know now, starting from Manana and getting to Papali would have been a three day thing or a two full day excursion. What we experienced was two 10+ hour hiking days and it was a hard 10+ hours for both days.  The plan today was to start on Manana drop into the valley towards Iliahi ridge, then drop into the valley towards Waiawa, and drop into the valley again towards Kipapa. From Kipapa, we would make the long hike up to the Ko’olau Summit, then to Waiahole Uka, crossover to Waikane, and then all the way to the Poamoho Cabin where we would set up camp.
