Another Trip on the Old Historic Waikiki Trail
Waikiki Trail - June 17, 2014
Last time I did the Old Historic Waikiki Trail, it took a few days and a lot of trial and error. This time I knew exactly where all 23 markers were located. My goal this time was to complete the trail in 1 1/2 hours + take pictures and take breaks. To find all the markers is quite a distance about 7.5 miles or so. I also wanted to input all the markers on my backcountry app.
After dropping the kids off at summer fun, I drove to Waikiki, parked at the Diamond Head side of Kapiolani Park. Parking is free on this side of the park which is important because with metered parking, time will run out and you'll be at risk of a parking ticket. I started walking at about 9:30am. Before starting the first marker, I took some pictures of the Natatorium, San Souci beach, and the Kapahulu Groin. This set me back 10 minutes as I chose to walk on the Kapahulu Groin eventually meeting up at marker 1,2,4,5, & 6.
Marker's 7 & 8 are out of the way on Ka'iulani Ave, so I had to walk up and backtrack. The Ka'iulani surfboard is not there anymore which is sad. Makers 9,10 are near each other. Marker 9 is the former International Marketplace. Though construction is being done and they boarded up the area, through a window, you can still see marker 9 under the Banyan tree. At this point, I decided go through the Outrigger Waikiki and head towards the beach. After marker 10, is a long scenic walk on the beach to markers 13 & 14. After 14, its a good idea to get onto Kalia Road, sure it feels like your losing time, but you can hit 15 and make the left on Paoa Place to marker 16, 23, & 17. Because I did it this way, marker 22 was out of the way, so I had to back track on Ala Moana Blvd. After marker 22, it was a 1/2 mile walk to marker 18. To add insult to injury, the surfboard to marker 18 isn't there anymore, but I took a picture of the Ala Moana Beach entrance and used that as the new marker.
After Ala Moana, I needed to get onto Atkinson Drive to the Convention Center and marker 19. After marker 19 is the return trip back. This way is good because I can bee line it to markers 20, 21, & 12. The walk back didn't go too fast though because I got stopped at the lights. I went to 7-11 to rehydrate buying a slurpee and water. Walking onto Kalakaua and finishing 20, 21, & 12, I got antsy and made the left on Ka'iulani Ave to the Ala Wai Blvd. to get the last marker ~ marker 3. From marker 3, it was about 1/2 mile to my car to end the loop.
Total time it took was 3 hours. I got side track talking to some people and taking additional pictures.
