A Famous Landmark in Japan, but not so much in Hawaii
The Hitachi Tree - October 25, 2014
Today we decided to go feed the ducks. That was my selling point to the kids to get them to come with me on this day. But my true intention was for them to take a picture in front of the Hitachi Tree. Every time I came to Moanalua Gardens, I always wondered why so many Japanese tourist wanted to take a picture in front of that tree. I decided to do some research and found that this tree is in fact famous in Japan and when the Japanese tourist come here, they make a trip to see that tree.
The tree is famous because it is the Hitachi Group's logo. It was shown in a commercial back in the 1970s and has remained part of the company logo ever since. Hitachi makes electronic equipment and vehicles as well as plans and creates industrial system. The tree is suppose to symbolize its ever expanding business. That is why it grew so wide. Also, the tree is deemed by the City and County of Honolulu as exceptional. I guess that means its a great tree.
We went there and saw a bunch of tourist taking pictures in front of the tree. After our turn, the kids wanted to feed the ducks. We had tons of bread, months of keeping the ends and throwing it in the freezer makes for a lot of duck food. The kids had fun throwing bread to the ducks. But these ducks were so loud begging for food and there was a wedding ceremony nearby. In addition, my kids kept on making noise and I kept on telling them to be quiet and respect others. Getting impatient, I grabbed a load of food and threw it so we would be finished with feeding the ducks.
In all, it was a free activity which I like a lot. I think as a family we need to go hiking more. Not sure why we don't go anymore, maybe because I'm training for marathon and want to rest my legs.
