I Needed to Complete the Maunawili Ditch Trail
Maunawili Ditch II - June 18, 2015
I wanted to do Tripler to the Stairway to Heaven, however it looked socked in this morning, so I decided to do another hike that I wanted to finish ~ The Maunawili Ditch. I haven't completed this hike before, although I did try with Jared a few years back. Its not a trail that is sexy or anything, but more of a checklist type hike. Its also #16 on the Na Ala Hele trail system, a trail system in which I wanted to complete.
After realizing that I wouldn't do Tripler today, I got Jared ready and dropped him off at Crestview Summer Fun. From there, I filled up gas at Costcos and headed towards Waimanalo. Although I think parking my car in Waimanalo is safe, it still feels sketchy. I also have the feeling that I would discover the remains of a dead person in the area.
I started at 9:15am, and quickly made my way through the meandering trail. I went at a good pace. I was sick the previous week and this is a perfect hike to get back into the swing of things. The Mauanwili Ditch parallels an old ditch for about 2 miles or so. There are side trails going left and right, most likely from dirt bikers. This is also a good trail to trail run. It took me less than an hour to intersect the Demo trail. Instead of going right, I went left to the Demo trailhead. I ended up on Waikupunaha Street which is the start of the Demo trail. I walked up the road and made a left on Mahiku Place where my car was parked.
back to my car
I may have walked about a mile through the neighborhood. Nobody seemed to mind that I was there, so that was good. It was hot going back, but minor compared to that feeling when running in the heat. In a little over an hour, but not 1 1/2 hours, I got to my car and left. One good thing about the hike today, it gave me inspiration on what to cook for dinner tonight ~ bacon wrapped scallops with mushrooms.
