Kahikilani aka The Washington Stone

Kahikilani (Washington Stone)

This ancient site has been much harder to find than the rest of the North Shore Old Ancient Hawaiian sites. Starting in around 2013-2014, I've tried a a number of times, following the books directions, scouting, coming up with ideas, but all roads have led to dead ends. I've persistently tried to look for clues only to come up disappointed every time. I even bought binoculars to go look for this damn thing.

I think I have narrowed the search down to a particular location, but I still can't find it. Fellow OAG member, Daniel agrees with me on the location. Here are the clues
  • on a ridge in the Pamalu Area
  • can see it from the Chevron bus stop
  • the rock has an old Lehua lei around it
  • supposedly a plaque to identify it
  • near the Ehukai pillboxes second bunker
March 23, 2016

On this day, we went for the gusto. It would be Daniel, David, Aprille, Kellie and I. Daniel had a strong hunch it was a rock face on the next ridge over from the second pillbox on the Ehukai trail. I told Daniel that I've been in the gulch and there is a trail that could lead us to the Washington Stone. We put this plan into action. In about 1 hour, we hit the gulch. We made a guess to follow a path of brown guinea grass. This area, Daniel thought was once a path to get to the Washington Stone. He was correct. We were now in the general area. But with thick brush above and below us, we couldn't visually see the Washington Stone. I pushed my way to get a visual and saw that there was a drop below me, so I made my way up the ridge and saw it in all of its glory. I went back to tell the group that it was above us. We took different paths through barb wire and thorns, but eventually got to the rock. By the looks of it, we were the only ones here in a while. Kellie climbed up to the top. I was hoping she would find any evidence of the lehua lei, but to no avail. We then went to look for the plaque. Again to no avail. Feeling a little discouraged, we had to take a picture and try use that as our only evidence. I felt good though that the pursuit for the stone was given full effort. In life, that is all that is asked. Big thanks to Daniel for helping me find this rock. Doesn't seem like a huge thing now, but this story will make its way into the archives and one day someone will ask, Where is the Washington Stone? I heard some group called OAG found it.

Story of Kahikilani

Kahikilani was a young Hawaiian surfer looking for some waves at the North Shore. He ask the birds where the best surf was on the north shore. One day, the birds brought him a lehua lei from Ka'iulani. Kahikilani went to her cave everyday where they would have a romantic relationship. Ka'iulani would always give Kahikulani a lehua lei to show her love. One day Kahikilani went to the cave wearing an 'ilima lei which a girl he met on the beach gave him. Ka'iulani jealous called on an aumakua (shark) to punish him. Kahikilani's punishment? Turn to stone, the stone on Pamalu ridge, a.k.a. The Washington Stone.
