Another Opportunity to Hike Ahuimanu

Ahuimanu + Waterfall Chute - June 12, 2016

I haven't done Ahuimanu in like forever, 5 years or so. David invited OAG's and I took the opportunity to not only go, but have Jared tag along with me.

We met at 8:30am on Hui Kelu Street. Joining the hike today was DJ, Daniel, Alaina, Bernice, Darren, Jana and her two friends. We haven't seen Alaina in forever, she has been taking care of her parents until her dad passed a away a little away go. But her mom still has dementia, so she has been very busy with her parents.

One interesting thing about this hike are the taro complexes. There are signs that give a ton of information, more than the internet.

Ahuimanu was a huge taro complex. It is believe that this thing was operable way before the arrival of Captain Cook. The Hawaiian were able to divert water from the stream and use it for the complex. According to the sign, the complex was a engineering feat and very intricate.

The hike is short and in no time we got to the wall. A small hole was poked into the wall to divert water. Jared was getting bitten by mosquitoes.

I only been to the wall, David took us around the corner to a small waterfall chute and eventually to a bigger one, like 40 feet. We all got to the dry chute and talked story. The climb up the chute looked doable. But with no spikes, we didn't try it. That area near the chute would look amazing, I thought to myself. We tried to catch up story with Alaina.

On the way back, we took the junction and came out of an empty area near a house. This was the same route we took last time.

We walked on the street making a right turn to our cars.

Post hike meal was at Waiahole Poi Factory. The food was so good today. I was and continue to be impressed by the Hawaiian food. They do have the best kalua pig on the island.
