Fully Flowing Waterfalls on Oahu
Ahuimanu Waterfalls - August 6, 2016
We did this hike a few months ago yielding poor results, no waterfall just the chute. Today, Erik had a feeling that the chutes would be flowing. We were hiking tomorrow, however Erik wanted to hike today. I got a last minute text and asked Michelle if she wanted to go. After a short discussion it was a go.
On the way there, I had a feeling that I forgot my shoes. It was too late to go back as we were near the H3 on ramp. I said, "fuck it, I can do this hike in slippers". We met at Koolau McDonalds at 10:00 and drove to the trailhead. Hiking in slippers wasn't too bad, I had some grip. Michelle can hike with us now because she is eating healthy and exercising regularly.
We got to the wall in less than 40 minutes. To my surprise it was flowing heavy today. We took silk using Erik's ND filter. After a short break and a lot of mosquito repellent, we headed to the 2nd waterfall. Immediately, we could hear the flow, it sounded strong. In about 10 minutes, we got to an amazing waterfall. Last time, we got nothing, this time we got a pot of gold. It was definitely a stunning sight. The multi-tier waterfall was tall, the lower falls was about 25 feet high and the upper falls 60 feet high. As we sat, Erik saw a centipede. I jumped up scared as shit. Everyone laughed.
Michelle and I took a couples picture, one I need to post on IG soon, maybe later in the week. Erik said there was another waterfall, I didn't remember one the last time. So we went. Last time, we took the trail to an ancient Hawaiian oven. However, further progress would have got us to the waterfall. Who knew? We got to the waterfall, it was flowing pretty well, it had a strong flow, just like the last one. This waterfall was also multi-tiered, with the lower falls about 35 feet, and the upper falls, I'm not sure. Couldn't get a good vantage point.
Going back was fast, I led us down the wrong trail, but Daniel figured it out and we turned back. Not bad, my slippers held up. Post hike meal was at Waiahole Poi Factory. I got the Laulau + Kalua, it was so ono. Conversation was at a high level and we had a great time.
