The Most Average Hike on Oahu with No Crowd

Image
Waimalu Ditch Trail - January 28, 2017 For some reason I wanted to do this trail again. It was because we are anticipated to do the Waimalu Meadow next week. However, the people going on the hike next week didn't want to do the hike today. I thought they would like to do the Ditch trail to relive memories of the past, but I guess not.  Joining the hike today was Daniel, David and Michelle. That was it! Meeting time was at 8:15am at Onikiniki Place. I always called it Okinikini Place for some reason. Michelle and I had no snacks in the house, so we stopped at 7-11 to grab musubi's. I swear it is getting expensive. A few musubis, doughnut, and gummy bears were over $10.  Michelle and I had to get back for Aunty Laurie's dinner at 5pm. I predicted a 5 hour hike. If we followed plan, we would have enough time to eat at our favorite Aiea place: Shiro's.  Waimalu Ditch has some distance, its about a 7 mile hike. Although elevation change aren't drastic, the blow downs tod...

Going to the Pohakea Area

Image
Pohakea - January 22, 2017 Baron was able to get access into Kunia Farms. I guess he has always longed to go back to the Pohakea Pass. As it stands, it probably is the most scariest hike I've been on and he admits that it was scary for him too. Maybe he wanted to see it in all of its glory, again? Who knows what the motivation was?  Baron was going to do recon of the area. He usually only invites his most trusted hikers, which is us, the OAG's. Mainly we are down for whatever and won't complain in the process. The goal today was to get to the base of the Pohakea Pass via an old Jeep Road. Then, we would contour and head up a ridge up to the summit and get to the top of the pass. Simple enough. But Baron didn't know if we would have to bushwhack any part of the trail.  Baron predicted an 8 hour day, so we were all ready for an 8 hour day. We started by taking a dirt road to a gate. We parked near the gate which was locked and got ready to enter. The road went uphill for ...

The Oneawa Hills without the Teal Blue Lake

Image
Oneawa Hills - January 21, 2017 Michelle wanted to see the teal lake. I put an invite to the OAG's to do the Oneawa Hills.  Joining me today was Daniel, David, Darren, Erik, Aprille, Jana, Michelle and I. We met at the Friendship Garden's trailhead at 8:30am. Parking is limited, but we found a spot near the trailhead.  Oahu was under a wind advisory today, so it was windy. The wind was played second fiddle because Kaneohe was receiving a lot of rain last evening and it continued throughout the day. We hiked up the Friendship Garden trail to Kokokahi Ridge in the pouring rain. The hike was easy I thought.  In a little more than 1 hour we hit the lake. The lake was an ugly blue-green color. Michelle was not happy. I told her can't have everything. I'm not sure why the lake was that color, usually it is teal.  We still had fun at the lookout just enjoying nature. We decided to go back the way we came. Michelle had some problems going down the hill as she fell a couple o...

Did you know there are Bunkers Near the Top of Kaena Point?

Image
Kaena Point Bunkers - January 7, 2017 I wanted to do this hike for a while since last year. The OAG's seemed to want to do this hike as well. Its not hard, so it seemed that almost everyone wanted to come out and do the Kaena Point bunkers. Joining the hike today was Michelle, Allison, Erik, Aprille, Darren, Janice, and Erik and Aprille's friend Christian.  We met at Erik's house at 7:40am and took two cars to Kaena Point. Daniel was already waiting for us. Yesterday I text Daniel that Erik would take his 4WD to the the gate and we would have a short walk to the point. He was ecstatic. However, when we got there, we needed a combination code to get through the gate. Unfortunately we had to walk in.  The goals today were to get to the point and then go up the ridge to the bunkers and hopefully get to the summit of Pu'u Pueo.  Its January, so this is a great time to see whales, monk seals, and albatross. I think the shearwater birds come in March. When I used to hike K...

Pali Puka at the Pali Lookout

Image
Pali Puka - January 7, 2016 Michelle wanted to exercise and we decided to do Pali Puka. I thought it would be a little dangerous, but felt that she could do it. The trail wasn't too busy when we got there. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the puka. Michelle handled well. I feared a little bit for her safety, but she did good.  We got some good pictures on a good weather day. The trail is wide open. Last time I did this hike was 5 years ago, it is well trodden. On the way back, we saw at least 2 dozen people coming up.  I still don't think my kids can do this hike. If they do, they would need some help and guidance.  Michelle at puka ' steep climb almost to the top
