Finally getting to do Hapapa-Kanehoa, but not quite

Hapapa-Kanehoa Part 1 - June 11, 2017 There was no question that this hike was on my to do list this summer. It has been on the to do list every summer for about 4 years now. Today I was going to make a strong attempt to get to Kanehoa. Over the past 5 years or so, the Hapapa trail has been closed due to live firing drills. Getting to Hapapa now is hard because the trail is close on most weekend. However on a hike Josh S. this year, he told me to check the facebook site called Army Garrison. On the page has a bunch of details of when Hapapa would be open. With Michelle working at Tripler she has access to the military base without hassle. These two things put together equal something great.  With rain in the forecast, we were suppose to go tubing. However, the rains didn't some in the morning, so we reverted back to  Hapapa-Kanehoa. The bad thing was that we had a late start time about 9am. I set a turn around time at 1pm, so we wouldn't be out there all day because they close...

In Search for the Poamoho Stream

Poamoho Exploration - June 10, 2017 We cancelled Waimalu-Aiea on Friday and decided to get the permit for Poamoho. With rain in the forecast, we rolled the dice and decided to go to Poamoho anyway. It was apparent that early in the morning, it was going to be a rainy day. We felt that instead of going to the summit, we would explore the stream and get to the waterfall.  Only Aprille knew where the waterfall was, but she went 5 years ago. Joining the hike today was Aprille, Erik, Janice, Michelle and I. We got to Erik's house about 8:15am and jumped into Erik's 4x4 so that he could drive us to Poamoho. The drive was a bit tough on Erik's truck since there were a lot of mud puddles and the road was slick. We got to the trailhead at about 9am.  The hike to the junction was about 45 minutes. We made the left on a spur ridge down a swath. It took us about 20 minutes to get where Aprille thought the turn off was. However, she didn't feel that this was the correct turn off, ...

A Beautiful Day in Makapu'u

Makapu'u Ridge - June 8, 2017 Aprille wanted to hike. She was going to take her friend Anna with her. Also Clayton wanted to hike with Aprille. They decided on an easy hike, one that is a good meet and greet. Hence, Makapu'u Ridge.  Aprille picked me up in Mililani and drove us to Makapu'u. It was about 8:30am. Not wanting to hang out at the parking lot, Aprille, Anna, and I proceeded to go up the ridge and not get seen by some phantom guard who would turn us away. I had to take a piss badly. We got up to where we couldn't be seen from the parking lot. I jumped into some koa haole trees to empty out.  We continued on the ridge at a slow pace waiting for Clayton. We saw him coming up from the parking lot or what seemed to look like him.  pic of Rabbit Island  We finally met up at the crest of the ridge. He brought his friend Nimai, I think that was his name. The goal today was to get to the puka. It was good to talk story with everyone.  We saw a group at the puk...
