Ancient Terraces of Luluku
Luluku Trail Clearing - August 13, 2017
Baron wanted to clear the stream that led to the Luluku Terraces. I told him it would be very difficult and may take a whole day. We projected an entire day and told everyone.
He was game and so were the OAG's. Joining the hike today was Baron, Erik, Darren, David, Michelle, Bernice and I. The OG -- OAG's. We met at Hoomaluhia at 9am, but it took us 15 minutes to get ready to start.
We headed towards Luluku stream and encountered the hau. The newbies like Bernice and Michelle were like woah. We chipped away. There was surprisingly not that much hau. After about 1.5 hours of clearing, we got to the private taro fields and the tunnel. I thought it was over and this is what confused all of us. We had a lot more to go. I forgot that we had to go under both the H3 and Likelike. I even think DJ and Baron who joined me on the two previous clearings forgot too.
From the tunnel, we were under the H3 and took a wrong turn and had to bushwhack. This will be critical next time we go to take the correct junction after the tunnel. We bushwhacked for a while until we got to the big tunnel. There is a small tunnel to the right which we decided to forgo this time around.
The big tunnel led us right behind the board of water supply pumping station. This was good because it bypassed the pumping station. The big tunnel was cool because it was at a angle and we could slide down with our tubes. However there are these concrete barriers which are in the way, so will have to figure something out.
We took the service road to a trail that led us to the clubhouse. From there, we didn't know where to go. We forgot and didn't have our tracks to lead us. We went through a dry chute and got tangled in hau, we backtracked to the ridge and made our way. There was a point where we had to make a choice. We remembered that left was the nice chute and right was the ugly chute. We had to the choose the right path. I led the group left and it was the correct chute. We got to the nice chute quickly about 25 minutes. We admired the chute for about 30 minutes before heading back. One could only imagine it flowing one day.
While going back we visited the banana patch. To our amazement, it was super overgrown and a disgrace. David and Erik tried to clear it, but there was just too much guinea grass. We headed back proud of ourselves. We accomplished so much today. We even found a trail that led back to the tunnel which we will have to remember the route back next time.
We went back the same way we came and reaped the benefits of our hard work. We got out in about 2 hours. If we did this hike again. It would take us 4 hours to do. We may need the track next time however.
