Aiea Loop Bi-sectional Hike
Aiea Loop Bi-sectional – December 24, 2011
I tried this trail once before in secrecy, one of those after work hikes. But I have fallen short. Last month, the HTMC did the trail on a Saturday. Having something to do that day, I failed to make it out for the outing. A month has past. Being that today was December 24th and with the hustle and bustle going on, I decided to try find the Aiea Loop Bisectional trail.
The Aiea Loop Bisectional trail is said to be a HECO powerline trail. It makes you wonder who the coordinator for HECO is. He must know all the hiking routes created by HECO. The Aiea Loop Bisectional trail is only 3 miles long, and literally cuts the Aiea Loop trail in half.
My goal today was to hike onto Aiea Loop for about 25 minutes, then I would look for a ribbon or a ridge heading down the mountain to the right. I would take the ridge before rejoining the Aiea Loop trail.
I put my plan to execution. At about the 25 minute mark, a trail appeared to the right leading down the mountain. The HTMC clearing crew did a great job, for I had not seen this trail last time I attempted to hike it.
While going down the mountain, there was a junction. There were ribbons to the right, but trees were blocking the trail. So I went left. What a dummy I am. After 10 minutes, I went down the mountain and got stuck, so I had to go back to the junction. This time I went right. The ridge is not too steep and meanders all the way down to Aiea stream. The stream is usually dry, but on this day it was running. If you follow the stream mauka, there may be a waterfall considering the change in elevation upstream. I followed the stream makai until I rejoined the Aiea Loop trail. I ended up by the picnic benches. Crap, I told myself. Now I have to go uphill to my car to complete the loop. There must be a way to rejoin the trail back to the trailhead, maybe one day I’ll find it.
This trail is a quick fix if you want a workout. It only took me 1 ½ hours to complete the loop. The trail is tricky however, with the meandering of the ridge and many false trails.
